After cleaning and frame repair

Soldiers Returning from War
G. Maroitz, 19th century
Often frames are painted with gold paint to disguise
damage. The paint eventually turns a ghastly color.
After cleaning the painting, frame repair, stripping the
gold paint, gilding and applying a realistic patina to
create a feeling of antiquity.

De Ondertekening Van Het Coevoerden
O. C. Hooymeijer, Dutch, 2001
When the painting arrived from London, the protective paper had adhered to the surface in several places.
After cutting away the paper not stuck to the paint, we could locally dissolve the varnish with mild solvents and gently remove the packing paper. Varnish was reapplied to the afflicted areas.
Framed and ready for installation. Stephen was poised to keep Spanky, the family dog, from becoming too inquisitive.

This iconographic painting was left in a shed in Mexico for decades.
A substantial area of loss appears over the left shoulder in a crescent shape.
After filling with a canvas of similar physical characteristics, it was inpainted to
match the newly cleaned and stabilized painting.

Inpainting in the hands of a capable conservator can
successfully integrate missing pictorial elements. We use
reversible restoration colors over an isolating varnish layer.
This protects the painting from any possible and irreversible
cross linking of the retouches to the original artwork.

A 19th century European painting by and unidentified artist was treated
and framed in an antique replica Florentine 22k gold frame.
