Principal Paintings Conservator



Elizabeth Buchter is a fine artist and art educator but still has time to bring her skills to MÖBIUS as a conservation assistant and inpainter.


Stephen Lynch  designs and fabricates many technical tools and devices for the lab.
He is also an exhibiting artist working with three dimensional and found objects, a
skilled leather craftsman, woodworker, furniture restorer, and custom picture framer.



Mentoring

MÖBIUS: art conservation is committed to mentoring preprogram students who wish to gain practical conservation skills before entering a graduate program. Student interns learn many basic skills, professional ethics, introductory scientific methods, and business principles. An internship is short term training experience with the goal of learning specific skills or gaining specific knowledge, usually defined or agreed upon at the beginning of the experience. Student interns are recruited from the University of California at Santa Cruz, nearby colleges, or through museums in the area.  




Current Interns


Hannah Czehatowski, our newest intern, graduated from Columbia College in Chicago with a BFA . While finishing her prerequisite courses for graduate school and preprogram intern hours, Hannah also plans to participate in an intensive language course in Mandarin when visiting China.



Interns of the Past


Jessamyn Miller was our intern from UCSC where she studied art history
and visual culture. She is a recent graduate degree from the Art Institute of Chicago in historical preservation  and will focus on the conservation of our architectural heritage.




Ainslie Harrison works on the verso of
a canvas to remove an old patch.

Ainslie was an honors graduate from UCSC in art history and anthropology and has an interest in Etruscan art and artifacts. Formerly a student in Italy at Studio Art Centers International (SACI), she is currently attending graduate school in objects conservation at Queens University in Canada after completing a research project in Italy under a Fullbright Scholarship.



Eva Maria Spampinato  recasts missing ornamentation on a 19th century French frame. Eva Maria is a graduate in art history from UCSC and was introduced to art restoration at SACI in Italy. She plans to specialize in paintings and paper and is currently working as a conservation assistant in the Bay area.

Ami Davis is the former Education Coordinator at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History who is pursuing graduate studies in museology at the California State University in San Jose. Ami was instrumental in coordinating the John Ross Key Exhibit at the Museum which demonstrated the strategies conservators use to conserve historical artworks and artifacts. Here she reduces animal skin glue from the verso of a canvas.


Kara Brown  is a fine artist who developed her skills at inpainting (retouching) artworks while working at our studio and lab. Now a resident of both Georgia and Hawaii, Kara makes her living as an exhibiting artist and graphic designer while working for conservators as a skilled inpainter.


Odile Madden  gets into each project with an eye for detail. Interns are given a chance to perform slave labor before entering graduate school. Odile chose NYU, where she studied objects conservation.

After graduating, she accepted a position at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art as an objects conservator where she participated in creating workshops in the application of laser technology to the conservation of art and artifacts.

An authority on the history and conservation of netsuke (miniature Japanese sculptures), Odile has made important contributions to the field through her participation in exhibits, research, publication, and lectures around the world. Odile currently is a Ph.D. student in the Heritage Conservation Science program at the University of Arizona while working as a Research Assistant in the Arizona State Museum conservation lab.


Anneliese Ragan, was an apprentice trained restorer of ceramics and glass. Anneliese left the States to obtain a Masters of Science at the De Montfort University in Leicester, England, where she specialized in research and applied science in the use of contemporary art materials.
