Frames

Old and  damaged frames are sometimes painted with gold paint which turns
brown as it oxidizes. We removed the paint, applied a red bole undercoating,
sizing, gold metal leaf, and then added attractive corner ornaments and
a filet on the inside of the frame. Applying the final patina, abrasions, dings,
flyspecks,  and spider poop made the restored frame appear naturally aged.

This project required the removal of surface dirt and discolored gold paint on
a large frame. Repairs were made to the broken miters in the corners. Finally,
a student intern is seen applying metal leaf. The 19th century frame and painting
is in the  permanent collection of the Santa Cruz Public Library and is one of
the historical artworks that depict Santa Cruz in the late 19th century.
