A favorite client asked us to look at a few family heirlooms. Family legend held that one was particularly important. It was a portrait of a young girl by Robert Henri (1865-1929), a leading figure among the Social Realists known as the Ashcan School in New York from the early 1900's. Known for painting ethnic subjects, Henri traveled to Ireland in 1924 and painted portraits of young children. The painting entitled "Mary Agnes" had not been seen for decades and was destined to create quite a stir in the art market. The owners flew to New York to observe the spirited auction at Sotheby's in December of 2009. "Mary Agnes" sold at the last minute to an anonymous phone bidder in excess of 1.6 million dollars.

Richards was one of the foremost proponents of the American Pre-Raphaelite movement although he is also associated with the Hudson River School. He eventually rejected the romanticized and stylized approach in favor of meticulous factual renderings. Richards was elected as a full member of the National Academy of Design (the first art museum in America) in 1871. Few paintings of this dimension (48 x 72 inches) exist outside of museums. This painting was damaged during transport when it was tied with thick ropes to an automobile. The painting was featured at the Cantor Museum at Stanford University in a recent retrospective of the artist's work. Our client's family donated a substantial number of artworks to the museum.
